Another rich touchstone
of the Franciscan and Felician way of life is its Marian traditions and
spirit. The Franciscan Rule reminds us: "Let the Brothers and Sisters
keep the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God and our Lord
Jesus Christ ever before their eyes. Let them do this according to the exhortation
of St. Francis who held Holy Mary, Lady and Queen in the highest veneration
since she is the virgin made church. Let them also remember that the Immaculate
Virgin Mary, whose example they are to follow, called herself the Handmaid
of the Lord."
The Felician Sisters,
dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, honor her as Mother and Lady
of our Congregation. We experience a living communion with her Son and
through her bring His redemptive healing to a suffering humanity.
Blessed Angela laid
herself and the Congregation in this heart. Felician Sisters need to revitalize
all of these traditional embers. For only by becoming ever new, can religious
life maintain its traditional and permanent significance. For even if
each geographic Province of the Felician Congregation is named after one
of the titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary and even if each Felician Sister
has Mary as part of her name, this does not ensure that the Marian spirit
of the Congregation will endure.
Devotion to Mary
was formerly expressed primarily in the form of specific prayers, devotions
and rituals. Many of these are still retained by our Congregation, such
as the daily rosary, Marian feasts and the praying of contemporary Marian
litanies and our global Rosary Crusade.
Today, our Marian
spirit is best preserved and revitalized by reflecting in each of our
lives, the faith, the faithfulness and the contemplative spirit - "the
pondering and keeping in her heart" - of Mary's life and role as
reflected in the Gospels.
